Manila: Matthew Sia will coach the University of the East junior basketball team, Strong Group Athletics announced Wednesday. The Junior Warriors are set to defend their title in UAAP Season 88, beginning their campaign against the National University-Nazareth Bullpups on September 21 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

According to Philippines News Agency, Sia steps into the position previously held by Andrew Estrella, who will now serve as the team's consultant while leading the Letran Squires in the NCAA. Sia will be supported by Karl Santos, who is also the coach for UE's Under 19 team. Sia's coaching experience includes working under Santos with the La Salle Greenhills Greenies from 2015 to 2021, and roles with the Letran Knights, Adamson Lady Falcons, PBA 3x3 teams, and Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League teams such as Imus, Pampanga, Bicol, and Valenzuela.

Sia expressed surprise at his new role, stating, "I was surprised that coach Karl said it's time for me to be a head coach because you saw that we weren't together, but he knows and he sees that I'm maturing in other leagues." He highlighted the importance of the guidance he received from both Estrella and Santos, which helped him quickly adapt to his new responsibilities.

Sia's mission includes continuing the development system that has previously nurtured talents like Luis Pablo, Seven Gagate, Jacob Cortez, and JC Macalalag. He emphasized the importance of building character and establishing a solid foundation for the young players. "I'm just told not to put pressure on myself, and beyond wins and losses, the focus is really on the foundation and character of the kids. That's what coaches Karl and Andrew say tirelessly when mentoring me," Sia stated.
