Singapore PM’s Visit to Manila Aims to Enhance Bilateral Relations

Manila: The upcoming visit of Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong to Manila this week will serve as an opportunity for leaders of the Philippines and Singapore to deepen bilateral cooperation, Wong's office said Tuesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the visit reaffirms Singapore's commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Philippines and provides a platform for leaders to exchange views on enhancing bilateral ties, as well as discussing regional and global developments. Wong is set to conduct a working visit to the country from June 4 to 5, upon the invitation of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

During his stay in Manila, the Singaporean leader will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Rizal Monument and will receive a ceremonial welcome at Malaca±ang Palace. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Wong, Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs Sim Ann, along with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In discussions with President Marcos, the leaders are expected to focus on cooperation in various sectors including health, climate change mitigation, and civil service. This visit coincides with the 56th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and the Philippines, which was celebrated on May 16, 2025.

Over the years, both nations have engaged in high-level exchanges and have intensified collaboration in key areas such as trade, investment, people-to-people ties, and security and defense cooperation. Last month, during the Shangri-La Dialogue, Singapore Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing extended an invitation to Philippine special forces for training in Singapore and expressed interest in similar opportunities for Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) troops in the Philippines.

These discussions cover potential collaboration in navigation flights, Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul, as well as Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response. Earlier this year, the Singaporean Navy landing ship tank RSS Endeavour also made a goodwill visit to Manila, further illustrating the strengthening ties between the two nations.
