SMPC Fuel Supply Stable; Alternative Sources Sought Amid Oil Crisis

Manila: Fuel supply remains ample for Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) despite concerns stemming from the Middle East crisis, with the company also exploring alternative sources to ensure continued adequacy, an official said Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, SMPC President Maria Cristina Gotianun stated in an online briefing that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is exerting upward pressure across the economy, affecting their fuel-dependent operations. However, she assured that while developments are fluid, the company has a steady fuel supply and is actively seeking alternative sources with lower premiums.

Gotianun explained that fuel efficiency programs are being implemented to conserve fuel, including utilizing DMCI Power's wind energy offtake to reduce diesel consumption. She also reiterated the company's commitment to pursuing a mining area in Semirara Island, Caluya, Antique, despite the lack of response from the Department of Energy, which plans to bid out 10 coal blocks.

The company, which holds a 50-year coal operating contract for Semirara until July 14, 2027, is responsible for producing approximately 97 percent of the Philippines' domestic coal supply. Gotianun highlighted the firm's extensive experience and expertise in coal mining, emphasizing their mine plan's role in maintaining steady production, supporting energy security, and delivering benefits to the government.

She also mentioned the company's flexibility in redeploying capabilities, personnel, and capital to other sector opportunities, aligning with the supportive direction for responsible mining. Furthermore, Gotianun reported a 24 percent increase in coal production to 19.9 million metric tons in 2025, marking the fourth consecutive year of record growth.
