Dublin: A solar eclipse sweeping across parts of the Northern Hemisphere on Wednesday is offering scientists and skywatchers a rare opportunity to study the sun, while also highlighting how eclipses have helped astronomers better understand the wider universe. The Moon will pass directly between Earth and the Sun, with a total eclipse visible along a narrow path through Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain. Ireland will experience a partial eclipse.
According to Philippines News Agency, Oisin Creaner, an assistant professor of astrophysics at Dublin City University who writes for Irish broadcaster RTE, emphasized the scientific value of eclipses. Creaner noted that eclipses have intrigued astronomers from ancient times, such as the era of Newgrange, to the present day. These celestial events allow scientists to learn about the Sun and the basic principles of the universe.
During most eclipses visible from Earth, the Sun and Moon appear nearly identical in size despite the Sun being approximately 400 times wider and 400 times farther from Earth than the Moon. This alignment enables the Moon to obscure the Sun's surface during a total eclipse, exposing its outer atmosphere, known as the corona. Creaner highlighted that this phenomenon allows observers to study the Sun closely without being overwhelmed by its brightness.
Eclipses have historically played a role in testing key physics theories. In 1919, observations during a total eclipse confirmed predictions made by Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, as the apparent positions of stars near the Sun shifted as anticipated. This principle of transit is now applied beyond our solar system to study exoplanets. By observing the dip in starlight when an exoplanet transits its star, scientists can gather information about the planet's atmosphere and chemical composition.
Creaner suggested that such methods might eventually aid the search for life on planets orbiting other stars.
