Manila: House Assistant Majority Leader Zia Alonto Adiong of Lanao del Sur on Wednesday said the House of Representatives' decision to expel Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco 'Kiko' Barzaga was rooted in accountability and decorum rather than politics.

According to Philippines News Agency, the House voted on Tuesday to adopt Committee Report No. 298 of the Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which recommended Barzaga's expulsion for disorderly behavior, conduct unbecoming of a member of Congress, and violations of House rules and ethical standards.

Speaking before the Kapihan sa Manila Bay media forum, Adiong rejected suggestions that the House action was directed at Barzaga because of his perceived support for Vice President Sara Z. Duterte, whose impeachment trial is set to proceed before the Senate. Adiong, the designated House spokesperson in Duterte's impeachment trial, said lawmakers are expected to uphold the dignity of the institution and the public trust bestowed upon them by voters.

Adiong expressed that elected officials should maintain behavior that respects the office they hold and the constituents who entrusted them. He emphasized that elected positions belong to the people, not the officials who occupy them, and urged respect for the electorate.

Barzaga has been vocal in his criticism of House leaders and the impeachment proceedings against Duterte, frequently using social media and public statements to attack fellow lawmakers and question the chamber's actions. Adiong noted that lawmakers accusing others of wrongdoing should use legal channels and provide evidence rather than making unsubstantiated allegations.

Adiong criticized Barzaga's pattern of spreading unproven accusations, arguing that it undermines the House's integrity. He also addressed claims that disciplinary action infringed on freedom of expression, distinguishing between free speech and rumor-mongering without evidence.

He highlighted that freedom of expression comes with responsibilities, especially for public officials, and that actions have consequences. Adiong reiterated the importance of accountability and responsibility in public office.
