Manila: Speaker Faustino 'Bojie' Dy III on Monday rallied the House of Representatives to pursue legislation and policy measures to shield Filipinos from the effects of oil price shocks brought about by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. In a statement, Dy said lawmakers and House committees will push priority bills aimed at cushioning the impact of rising oil prices on key sectors of the economy, particularly workers, commuters, farmers, and small businesses.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dy emphasized the importance of addressing global crises that affect Filipino citizens. He stated that the House of Representatives will collaborate with the Executive to focus on effective measures to alleviate the burden of rising oil prices on various sectors of the economy, especially targeting the welfare of workers, commuters, farmers, and small businesses.
The Speaker from Isabela highlighted how escalating tensions in the Middle East demonstrate the direct impact of international developments on the Philippines, particularly through increased oil prices that strain Filipino families. He acknowledged the natural fear and concern that arise from rising oil prices, which drive up transportation fares, food, and other basic necessities.
Despite these challenges, Dy reassured the public of Congress's commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Filipinos. He affirmed that the House of Representatives would continue to fulfill its mandate to protect the Filipino people's interests, focusing on policies that strengthen the economy, protect livelihoods, and ensure safety and well-being.
Dy called for national unity in confronting global uncertainties, reminding the public of past challenges overcome through the strength and unity of the Filipino people. He expressed confidence that by uniting and caring for each other, the nation can overcome any challenge.
He also assured the public that government institutions would persist in their efforts to protect Filipinos and guide the country through global challenges.
