Batangas: The Shakey's Super League (SSL) National Invitationals is considering maintaining its three-leg format in future editions following a positive response from both participating teams and fans. This format allows local talents to showcase their skills on their home turf against players from visiting University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) teams, with the tournament making stops in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Ian Laurel, president of league organizer Athletic Events and Sports Management Inc. (ACES), emphasized the unique impact of the format during a press conference at the Batangas Country Club. "The impact is really different. It's a big deal that we can bring the games closer to our compatriots in far-flung places," he stated. Laurel recommended continuing this approach annually, highlighting its benefits.
The Luzon leg features teams such as Far Eastern University, NCAA champion College of Saint Benilde, Letran, and host University of Batangas. The first leg, held in Davao City, saw National University clinch the title after defeating University of the Philippines, Notre Dame of Dadiangas University, and a Davao Selection team. This selection was composed of players from Ateneo de Davao University, Holy Cross of Davao College, and University of Mindanao.
Adamson University emerged victorious in the Cebu (Visayas) leg by defeating University of San Carlos. This leg also included teams like Ateneo de Manila University and University of Southern Philippines Foundation. Laurel noted the growing interest from local government units and provinces, mentioning requests from Palawan, Cagayan De Oro, and Ilocos for future tournaments.
The success and expansion of the SSL National Invitationals suggest a promising future for the league's unique format, with more regions expressing interest in hosting the event.
