Manila: The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Monday said the government is making 'strides' in its anti-corruption drive, specifically on its crackdown on the flood control scandal. In an interview ahead of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr's penultimate State of the Nation Address (SONA), NBI Director Melvin Matibag stated that the administration is on the right track since promising to hold accountable those involved in anomalous flood control projects.

According to Philippines News Agency, NBI Director Matibag highlighted the significant steps taken by the government, mentioning the arrest of the former Department of Public Works and Highways chief, Manuel Bonoan, as evidence of an impartial approach to justice. Matibag emphasized the complexity of the legal process, yet expressed confidence in the progress being made.

Matibag further disclosed that the NBI has identified 27 ghost projects currently under investigation, with 17 cases already filed before the Department of Justice. This development underscores the administration's commitment to tackling corruption at various levels.

In his State of the Nation Address, President Marcos revealed that the Ombudsman is preparing to file 'multiple cases' related to the flood control scandal against his cousin, former House of Representatives Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez. Despite the familial ties, Marcos stressed the importance of prioritizing the nation's interests over personal relationships.

President Marcos reiterated his dedication to serving the Filipino people, stating, "I am not the President of my family. I am not the President of my friend. I am the President of the Philippines and my duty is to you, my fellow Filipinos." His remarks reflect a commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.
