Bacolod: A strong partnership between the government and business sector is vital for the economy to thrive in the newly-formed Negros Island Region (NIR). This was underscored by Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Lacson during the Economic Drivers Forum of the Siquijor and Negros Island Business Week led by the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the SMX Convention Center here on Tuesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lacson emphasized that drivers of economic growth require the right conditions to flourish, highlighting the importance of collaboration between government and business. He remarked that all sectors are interconnected and thrive best when there is confidence in governance, access to financing, peace and order, skilled human capital, and clear regional direction.
Lacson pointed out that for Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor, micro, small, and medium enterprises are the engine of inclusive growth. These enterprises create jobs, build communities, and help these provinces progress. He noted that the economy is fueled by individuals and industries who transform limitations into opportunities, including farmers, women entrepreneurs, youth, cooperatives, creatives, and small manufacturers, all of whom are crucial to a future-ready NIR.
With Negros Island and Siquijor being rich in natural resources, tourism remains one of the region's most promising economic multipliers. Lacson stressed the need to build systems that support tourism growth while preserving the environment and local communities, including transport, safety, and digital presence.
During the forum, the Negros Electric and Power Corp. presented its expansion plans and discussed the state of power distribution in central Negros, including Bacolod City. The Sugar Regulatory Administration provided insights into farming, milling, and the state of the sugar industry. Other presentations included updates from PrimeWater Bacolod, Saludad by PHINMA Properties, DITO Business, Sustainable Seafood Philippines Corp., Phil-Data Business Systems Inc., Vallacar Transit Inc., and Negros Coastal Terminals Inc.
Additionally, the Department of Public Works and Highways and the Philippine Ports Authority shared updates on upcoming projects in the region, further underscoring the collaborative efforts to bolster the regional economy.
