SUCs to Play Critical Role in Transforming Research into Jobs and Growth: DEPDev

Manila: State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) must play a bigger role in transforming research into real-world solutions that create jobs and improve lives for Filipinos, the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) emphasized. In a statement, DEPDev highlighted Secretary Arsenio Balisacan's remarks at the 2026 Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) Annual Convention and General Assembly, where he referred to SUCs as one of the country's greatest assets.

According to Philippines News Agency, Balisacan stressed that while universities continue to produce talented graduates and excellent researchers, many operate under resource constraints that limit their potential accomplishments. He noted that SUCs are central to national efforts in talent development, knowledge generation, and translating research into solutions for real-world challenges.

Balisacan emphasized that strengthening the nation's innovation pipeline requires sustained investment and stronger support for research aligned with national priorities. He pointed out that innovation is a collaborative effort involving government, academia, industry, civil society, and development partners.

He articulated the vision of creating an environment where ideas transition swiftly-from the classroom to the laboratory, from the laboratory to industry, and ultimately, from innovation to improved lives for the people. Balisacan mentioned that key frameworks are already established to provide a shared policy direction.

The National Innovation Agenda and Strategy Document (NIASD) 2023-2032, alongside the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, outlines strategies, investments, and reforms aimed at fostering productivity, innovation, and inclusive development. Balisacan highlighted that when these efforts align, innovation becomes a robust catalyst for productivity, competitiveness, and inclusive growth. Conversely, misalignment can hinder even the most promising ideas from achieving significant impact.

Balisacan concluded by asserting that translating plans into collective action is crucial, as development is ultimately realized through institutions working collaboratively towards a common goal.
