Manila: Team Manila-Philippines is gearing up to defend its title at the PONY International Girls Softball World Series scheduled from July 17-20 in McAllen, Texas. The Filipina softbelles aim to continue their winning streak after clinching the U18 championship last year with an impressive eighth-game sweep of the tournament.
According to Philippines News Agency, coach Sheirylou Valenzuela, speaking at the Philippine Sportswriters Association forum held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, expressed confidence in the team's competitiveness despite having only three players returning from last year's lineup. Valenzuela identified Puerto Rico as a significant threat in the Philippines' quest for a third consecutive title.
The forum was also attended by Manila councilor and Team Manila Softball President Rafael 'Che' Borromeo and team manager Giovanni Mapa. Borromeo mentioned that while it is uncertain, there is speculation about participation from Japan and China, in addition to strong contenders like Puerto Rico and Mexico. He urged for support and prayers to help the team secure another victory.
Mapa detailed that most team members hail from Adamson, La Salle, and Bacolod, with the squad having been in training for approximately two months. The team is set to depart on July 14. He acknowledged the challenge of being the defending champions and the need to compete against several formidable teams.
This year's tournament will feature 27 teams, which will be divided into multiple groups, increasing the competition for the title.
