Thailand-Cambodia Conflict Threatens ASEAN Stability: DPR

Jakarta: Deputy chair of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR), Sukamta, has highlighted the risk posed by the armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia to the stability and security of Southeast Asia. He expressed concerns over potential disruptions to regional stability within ASEAN in a statement released in Jakarta.

According to Philippines News Agency, Sukamta mentioned that the conflict is unlikely to have a direct impact on Indonesia, as it does not share a border with either Thailand or Cambodia. However, he emphasized the importance of ASEAN countries strengthening solidarity to enhance the region's resilience against conflicts and their economic consequences.

Sukamta pointed out that the ASEAN region holds significant strategic value, with economic potential and natural resources attracting global powers. He warned that fragile relations among ASEAN countries could make the region susceptible to proxy conflicts. Despite the ongoing tensions, Sukamta expressed hope that Thailand and Cambodia would reach an immediate ceasefire agreement, noting that historically, both countries have managed to de-escalate and restore peace quickly.

He believes that Thailand and Cambodia understand the disastrous impacts of war and will soon find a peaceful resolution. Sukamta also urged the Indonesian government to take proactive steps to facilitate peace between the two nations through bilateral or multilateral channels.

Earlier, the Cambodian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Keo Chhea, announced that Cambodia has called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. On the same day, the Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that Bangkok would consider a ceasefire based on "appropriate on-the-ground conditions."
