MANILA: Three individuals tragically drowned while others were rescued during New Year's Day celebrations in the provinces of La Union and Pangasinan, highlighting the perils of swimming in hazardous conditions as authorities enforce stricter safety measures.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Police Regional Office in Ilocos Region (PRO1) reported that three people from Baguio City were rescued after a near-drowning incident in Aringay, La Union. The victims, aged 14, 20, and 74, were promptly taken to a nearby hospital. However, the 74-year-old was declared dead on arrival, marking a somber start to the New Year for the community.
In Pangasinan, an 11-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl from Calasiao were swept away by strong waves while swimming at Lingayen Beach with their uncle. Kimpee Jayson Cruz, deputy of the Lingayen Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO), stated that the uncle managed to save the girl, but the boy was later retrieved by rescue personnel. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at Lingayen District Hospital.
Additionally, a 44-year-old man from Binmaley, Pangasinan, drowned while swimming at Baybay Lopez Beach in Binmaley. Family members rescued him and rushed him to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival, as confirmed by a police report.
In response to these incidents, the LDRRMO has enforced a 'no swimming policy' in the Maniboc and Pangapisan areas of Lingayen Beach due to powerful waves. This decision follows the drowning of two individuals from Tarlac and Laguna on New Year's Eve. Cruz emphasized that the office remains on red alert, as they anticipate large crowds throughout the holiday weekend. Enhanced monitoring efforts are underway, involving collaboration with the Pangasinan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and other national agencies. Beachgoers are urged to comply with safety directives to prevent further tragedies.
