Baguio city: Tour packages designed to fit specific budgets are being promoted to encourage domestic travel and stimulate the economy, even amidst rising oil and commodity prices, a Department of Tourism (DOT) official revealed recently.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOT Undersecretary Shahlimar Hofer Tamano emphasized the significance of local travel and how such initiatives highlight tourist destinations and foster collaboration with tourism stakeholders. "At a time when Filipinos are more mindful of travel costs, initiatives like the regional travel fair help tourism enterprises generate jobs and encourage Filipinos to appreciate the beauty of our destinations," Tamano stated during the opening of the 'Business to Consumer' session of the travel fair.
Tamano further noted that tourism is about people, shared experiences, and collective efforts to bolster the economy. It also provides educational insights for future generations about the country's people, culture, and beauty. The three-day travel fair, a regular event organized by the Tourism Promotions Board, aims to invigorate the local economy by promoting tourism activities.
The session facilitated connections between tour agencies and promoters within the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and providers and other stakeholders for their tour packages and offers. Tamano highlighted the regional travel fair as a vital platform for driving local economies, showcasing resilience with innovations to adapt to changing times, especially during the pandemic and current economic challenges.
The event features at least 70 exhibitors from across the nation participating in the B2C sessions. Meanwhile, Jovi Ganongan, DOT-CAR director, expressed pride in the region's ability to showcase its beauty, resilience, and creativity. "Over the years, the region has continued to develop tourism products that highlight sustainability, cultural preservation, and community participation, values that remain essential as we move toward a more responsible and inclusive tourism industry," Ganongan said.
The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that in 2025, tourism contributed 8.9 percent to the country's Gross Domestic Product, spurring growth even in local communities with the creation of jobs.
