Maguindanao del sur: Local and military officials in Maguindanao del Sur successfully resolved a long-standing 'rido' (family feud) involving an elected local official and a Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commander. The resolution comes after several negotiations facilitated by the Army.
According to Philippines News Agency, Maguindanao Governor Datu Ali Midtimbang and Brigadier General Edgar Catu, commander of the Army's 601st Infantry Brigade, played a pivotal role in convincing Mayor Rasol Sangki of Ampatuan town and Commander Hamsa Kindo, a battalion commander at the MILF 11th Brigade, 118th Base Command, to end the feud. Brig. Gen. Catu stated that both individuals are residents of Ampatuan town.
The settlement was conducted in Talayan, Maguindanao del Sur, and was facilitated by Lieutenant Colonel Loqui Marco, commander of the Army's 90th Infantry Battalion (90IB). Brig. Gen. Catu acknowledged the challenges faced during negotiations due to the deep-rooted nature of the conflict, which had resulted in loss of lives and property damage. "But through the dedication and perseverance of the 90IB, both sides agreed to a peaceful settlement. This clearly shows that nothing is impossible when both sides in conflict are open to a peaceful settlement," he said.
Major General Donald M. Gumiran, commander of the Army's 6th Infantry Division, which oversees operations in Maguindanao del Sur, praised the successful resolution. He noted that the settlement serves as an inspiration and motivation to end violence and focus on mediation, inclusive dialogue, and peace-building efforts. Maj. Gen. Gumiran is also the commander of the Army-led Joint Task Force Central.
Governor Midtimbang called on other feuding parties in the province to follow the example set by Mayor Sangki and Commander Kindo, emphasizing the importance of choosing peace over armed conflict.
