Trump Expresses Doubts Over Gaza Ceasefire Agreement

Washington: US President Donald Trump expressed his skepticism on Monday regarding the sustainability of the recently brokered Gaza ceasefire agreement, emphasizing that the conflict is not a direct concern of the United States. Responding to questions during a signing ceremony at the Oval Office on the first day of his inauguration, Trump conveyed his lack of confidence in the longevity of the ceasefire, stating, "I'm not confident. It's not our war. It's their war. I think they are very weakened on the other side."

According to Philippines News Agency, Trump elaborated on his views by describing Gaza as "a massive demolition site" and highlighted the need for reconstruction in the region. He remarked on Gaza's potential, citing its location and climate, and suggested that substantial redevelopment could transform the area despite its current state.

The recent conflict in Gaza, marked by Israel's aggressive military actions, has resulted in the deaths of nearly 47,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children. This escalation followed a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Amidst the turmoil, a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas commenced on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. local time (0915GMT).

The conflict has drawn international legal attention, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its military actions.

Trump's remarks were echoed by his envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, during a speech at the Capitol One Arena. Witkoff praised Trump's leadership, asserting that it has "redefined what is possible in the pursuit of progress and stability in the Middle East." He attributed recent achievements, such as the release of hostages in Gaza, to Trump's decisive and pragmatic approach, claiming that these successes underscore Trump's influence and ability to navigate complex international challenges.
