Davao oriental: A tsunami warning was issued on Friday night after another major earthquake with magnitude 6.8 rattled Davao Oriental.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the earthquake occurred at 7:12 pm, with a depth of 10 kilometers, in Manay, Davao Oriental. The agency highlighted that based on its local tsunami scenario database, wave heights of more than one meter above normal tides are expected, with potentially higher waves in enclosed bays and straits.
Phivolcs warned of a destructive tsunami with life-threatening wave heights, forecasting that tsunami waves could arrive between 7:12 pm to 9:12 pm and persist for hours. Residents in the coastal areas of Surigao Del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Surigao Del Norte were strongly advised to evacuate to higher grounds or move farther inland immediately.
Boat owners in harbors, estuaries, or shallow coastal waters of the affected provinces were instructed to secure their vessels and move away from the waterfront. Those already at sea were advised to remain offshore in deep waters until further notice.
The magnitude 6.8 earthquake followed a 7.4 offshore earthquake at 9:43 a.m. Intensity IV, characterized as moderately strong, was felt in several locations including Davao City, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Magpet, Cotabato, Digos City, Davao del Sur, Sta. Maria, Davao Occidental, Nabunturan, Davao de Oro, Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, Malungon and Alabel, Sarangani, Tupi, South Cotabato, and Hinunangan, Southern Leyte.
