Metro Manila: Two wanted Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members who have been hiding for over two decades were arrested in separate police operations in Metro Manila, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said on Thursday.
According to Philippines News Agency, NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin announced that the first ASG member was apprehended around 10:30 p.m. on May 11, while exiting a construction site in Binondo, Manila. The second suspect was caught at approximately 11 p.m. on the same day, during a basketball game near his home on Alcoy Street, Barangay Bagong Pag-Asa in Quezon City.
Aberin stated that the arrests were made following an arrest warrant issued by a Basilan court, in connection with a case of kidnapping and serious illegal detention. This case dated back to the abduction of 15 plantation workers in Lantawan town on June 11, 2001.
"For over two decades, these identified ASG members hid behind false identities and sought refuge in our communities, but through our program against fugitives, we have proven that no criminal, no terrorist, can escape the long arm of the law," Aberin remarked.
He emphasized the significance of the operation, noting that it showcased enhanced intelligence efforts, strong alliances with partner units, and a steadfast commitment to protecting citizens from terrorism. "Justice may have been delayed, but today, it was delivered," Aberin affirmed.
During the arrests and subsequent identity verification, one suspect was found with a fake national ID, while the other had a falsified National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance. These attempts to conceal their identities were countered by credible identification from a victim-witness, confirming the fugitives' persistent efforts to evade justice.
The arrested individuals are currently in police custody as authorities prepare the return of the warrant of arrest and await a commitment order from the issuing court.
