UP Triumphs Over Ateneo in Thrilling UAAP Men’s Football Match

Quezon city: University of the Philippines survived Ateneo de Manila University, 3-2, Sunday night to remain unbeaten in the UAAP Season 88 men's football tournament at the UP Diliman Football Field. The Fighting Maroons now have 13 points and a goal difference of +5 after five matches. 'I think the boys showed true heart and a lot of character,' said UP head coach Popoy Clarino.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lorenz Tortona delivered the first goal for the Fighting Maroons just two minutes into the match, but the Blue Eagles tied the score on Ghanaian forward Kofi Agyei's goal in the 19th minute. Two goals from Liam Lampayan (45th minute) and Rehmat Sidhu (61st) gave UP a 3-1 lead. Ateneo skipper Dov Cari±o found the net in the 64th minute but the Fighting Maroons held on to seal the victory.

'We executed the plans correctly. Coming from the game, we can go back to training and work on correcting the mistakes that we made. What we want to do is try and improve our game and then try to stay consistent with our next games," said Clarino. Ateneo absorbed its second loss along with three wins and one draw, sliding to fourth place with seven points and a +2 goal difference.

Meanwhile, UP battles University of Santo Tomas at 4 p.m. while Ateneo meets Far Eastern University at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
