Cavite: The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to Philippine maritime security, turning over PHP1.9 million (USD34,500) worth of equipment to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for its Fleet Maintenance and Repair Group (MRG) Workshop at Sangley Point, Cavite on Aug. 18.
According to Philippines News Agency, the assistance, provided through the US Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), would help enhance the PCG's ability to maintain and repair its fleet. Rear Admiral Rommel Supangan, PCG Fleet Commander, emphasized that this activity is a significant step in their capability buildup, providing essential equipment for the MRG and reflecting a robust US-Philippine partnership in promoting maritime security.
US Embassy INL Director Kate Richie expressed continued support for the Philippines, pledging that the INL will assist the MRG in operationalizing their maintenance facility and addressing vessel sustainment requirements comprehensively across the Coast Guard Fleet. She highlighted that the transfer of essential equipment and backup power supply will enable a broader and more effective equipment repair program.
The 400-square-meter Fleet Sangley Point MRG Workshop, inaugurated in May 2024, with a PHP54 million (USD950,000) funding from the US Department of Defense and technical support from the US Coast Guard, complements the MRG facility in the Manila Port Area. This joint initiative among INL, the Joint US Military Assistance Group Philippines, and the PCG enhances maintenance and repair capability for small boats and systems aboard larger patrol vessels, which is crucial for the country's maritime law enforcement and defense.
The INL, alongside other US government agencies, is planning additional support for PCG vessel maintenance efforts in the coming year, through technical training programs, maintenance and logistic systems planning, and equipment donations for vessel operating stations.
