Manila: University of Santo Tomas-Gameville has been holding its own against powerhouse teams in the 2025 Spikers' Turf Invitational Conference, and much of the credit goes to the all-around brilliance of open spiker Josh Yba±ez.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Alas Pilipinas standout finished with 20 points (18 attacks, one block, and one ace) and 30 excellent receptions as the Golden Spikers conquered the Alpha Insurance Protectors, 26-24, 25-22, 35-37, 19-25, 22-20, on Nov. 7.
For his effort, Yba±ez was named Spikers' Turf Press Corps Player of the Week powered by Pilipinas Live for the period of Nov. 5 to 7.
'Of course, I'm always proud of my teammates. I'm so happy that we ended up getting the result that we want,' said Yba±ez in a news release Monday.
'We just want to win, and for them [the team] maybe. we still need to practice better," added the reigning UAAP MVP.
Yba±ez beat UST-Gameville teammates Al-Bukharie Sali and Edriel Alabar in the weekly honor given by print and online reporters covering the pioneering men's volleyball league organized by Sports Vision.
Also considered for the award were Cignal's Jay Rack Dela Noche, Criss Cross' Jude Garcia and Noel Kampton, and Savouge's Sherwin Caritativo.
The Golden Spikers are hoping to keep their momentum when they meet the defending champion Cignal HD Spikers on Wednesday at the Paco Arena.
"I think it's better if we focus on ourselves first because if we focus and know what we're doing on the court as a team, we'll always have a fight against any opponent," said Yba±ez, who is set to join the national team training for the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian Games.
UST-Gameville is tied for third with Cignal at 3-1, behind Criss Cross (4-0) and Savouge Aesthetics (3-2).
Alpha Insurance (2-2) ranks fourth, followed by FEU-DN Steel (1-2,) while Volleyball Never Stops and PGJC Navy have similar 0-4 records.
