Manila: Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva has reiterated his support for random drug testing among all senators, officials, and employees of the Senate, asserting that it is a crucial measure in preserving the institution's integrity. Villanueva emphasized the importance of leading by example, stating his willingness to undergo any form of drug testing himself.
According to Philippines News Agency, Senate Minority Leader Vicente 'Tito' Sotto III, who has long championed the cause of workplace drug testing, recently proposed reinstating random drug tests in the Senate. This initiative would encompass everyone from senators to rank-and-file employees. Sotto recalled implementing similar measures during his tenure as Senate president in 2018.
The push for renewed drug testing gained momentum following reports on August 13 that alleged marijuana use by a Senate staff member within the Senate premises. In response, Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr. revealed that Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero immediately ordered the Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms (OSAA) to conduct an investigation. The OSAA promptly submitted its findings the following day and shared a copy with Senator Robinhood Padilla for further action.
The proposed drug testing aligns with Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, which mandates drug testing for government officials and employees as part of efforts to ensure a drug-free workplace.
