Manila: Continued unavailability of several major coal-fired power plants prompted the raising of another yellow alert status for the Visayas grid on Tuesday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A yellow alert is issued when the grid's operating margin is inadequate to meet contingent demand.
According to Philippines News Agency, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), in an advisory, stated that the available capacity on the grid is approximately 2,590 megawatts (MW), while peak demand is expected to hit 2,394 MW. This situation arises as generating units 1 and 2 of the Therma Visayas Inc. and the Palm Concepcion Power Corporation remain out of operation.
The NGCP further highlighted that a total of eight power plants have been on forced outage just this month, which has exacerbated the situation. Additionally, 13 other power plants are currently running on derated capacities, leading to a significant total loss for the grid amounting to 929.8 MW.
