Manila: The emergency shutdown of Unit 1 of Kepco SPC Power Corp. (KSPC) in Cebu, coupled with high electricity demand, prompted authorities to issue a yellow alert status for the Visayas grid on Friday night. The yellow alert, which indicates that a grid's operating margin is insufficient to meet contingency requirements, was in effect from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., as stated by the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP). According to Philippines News Agency, the NGCP reported that KSPC Unit 1 has been on emergency shutdown since Thursday due to a boiler tube leak. This incident compounded the grid's existing low capacity, which has been affected by the unavailability of Units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas, Inc. (TVI), scheduled to return online by mid-August, and Unit 1 of the Cebu Energy Development Corp. The NGCP estimated the available capacity for the Visayas grid during the day at 2,564 megawatts (MW), with peak demand projected to reach 2,321 MW. In addition to the five power plants currently offline, th e grid operator noted that 20 other plants have been on forced outage since 2021. Furthermore, about 14 other power plants are operating at reduced capacities, resulting in a total capacity loss of 969 MW for the grid.
