Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced the nationwide resumption of voter registration next month in preparation for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) slated for later this year. Comelec Chairperson George Garcia revealed that the commission's seven-member panel has approved a 10-day voter registration period from August 1 to 10.
According to Philippines News Agency, the decision to resume voter registration was made to ensure eligible voters, particularly those aged 15 to 17, can participate in the upcoming village and youth polls. Chairperson Garcia highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that without registration, there would be no voters in the crucial 15 to 17 age group if the BSKE proceeds on December 1.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has yet to sign the proposed bill that defines the terms of village and youth officials. Should it become law, the bill will also postpone the BSKE from December 1, 2025, to the first Monday of November 2026.
