Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Wednesday that Vice President Sara Duterte could potentially be charged under the Anti-Terror Act (ATA) for her alarming statement about hiring an assassin to target President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez. This announcement comes amidst rising tensions and concerns over national security. According to Philippines News Agency, Justice Undersecretary Jesse Andres highlighted that the ATA explicitly defines acts of terrorism, including intentions to cause harm or threaten lives. He emphasized the seriousness of such threats, especially when aimed at causing fear or intimidation. Andres further underscored the national security implications of a vice president being accused of plotting against the president's life, questioning the public's acceptance of such a leader succeeding under suspicion. Andres elaborated on the potential consequences of such a threat, stating that it poses a severe impedim ent to the president's duties and must be addressed promptly. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to safeguarding elected officials, stressing that a threat to the president equates to a threat to every Filipino citizen. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla also assured the public of the DOJ's unwavering resolve against insurgency and lawlessness, reaffirming their dedication to protecting the Chief Executive and the Filipino nation. The Vice President's controversial online statement on November 23 drew strong reactions from lawmakers and officials. National Security Adviser Secretary Eduardo Año announced that all threats against President Marcos would be meticulously investigated, considering them a national security concern. Lawmakers, led by the House Speaker, condemned Duterte's statement as criminal and a direct threat to democracy. In response to the escalating situation, the National Bureau of Investigation has formally requested Vice President Duterte to provide her statement to investig ators by Friday.
