Warning Issued Over Foodborne and Heat-Related Illnesses During Holy Week

Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) advised the public against possible foodborne and heat-related illnesses this Holy Week as several areas across the country experience dangerous high heat index levels. In a statement Wednesday, the agency said extreme heat may cause illnesses such as heat stroke, and accelerates food spoilage allowing bacteria that causes food poisoning to multiply faster.

According to Philippines News Agency, during the Lenten season of 2024, the department recorded 122 cases of foodborne illnesses. DOH also reminded the public to exercise caution on the road as it anticipates a surge in travel during this Holy Week. From March 24 to 31 last year, the department logged about 631 cases of traffic-related injuries, the majority of which involved motorists not wearing a helmet and seatbelt.

The DOH raised Code White Alert in all public hospitals and health facilities from April 13 to 20 as the country observes Lent. Under Code White Alert, all medical personnel - especially those in emergency rooms and critical care units - need to be prepared for potential increase in patient volume due to accidents, injuries, and other health-related incidents.

DOH also advises the public to call the emergency hotline 911 and the DOH's hotline 0917-8059756 or 0917-8619528 for health emergencies or concerns.
