Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a public health emergency of international concern due to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. This decision follows consultations with states parties and considers the severity of the situation caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, the WHO has identified significant uncertainties regarding the actual number of infected individuals and the geographic spread of the virus. As of May 16, 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported eight laboratory-confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases, and 80 suspected deaths associated with Ebola.
Moreover, Uganda has documented two laboratory-confirmed cases, including one death. These cases were reported on May 15 and 16 and involve individuals who traveled from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with no apparent connection to each other.
