Makati: Host Assumption College-San Lorenzo promises a festive opening ceremony to mark the beginning of the 56th season of the Women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) at Makati Coliseum on Saturday. The event will start at 10 a.m., featuring the participation of 16 schools, followed by three basketball matches in the afternoon.
According to Philippines News Agency, Assumption College will face sister team Assumption Antipolo at 1 p.m., followed by a match between University of Santo Tomas-Angelicum College and St. Jude Catholic School at 2:30 p.m., both in the juniors division. Centro Escolar University will aim for a 13th consecutive seniors crown against University of Makati at 4 p.m.
On Sunday, the volleyball tournament will take place at St. Scholastica's College-Manila gym, basketball 3x3 (midgets division only) at Makati Coliseum, and futsal at St. Paul College Pasig. The other participating schools in the country's first and only tri-level league for women include Chiang Kai Shek College, La Salle College Antipolo, De La Salle Zobel, Miriam College, Philippine Women's University, St. Stephen's High School, San Beda College Alabang, and University of Asia and the Pacific.
These schools will also compete in various sports such as chess, badminton, swimming, taekwondo, poomsae, table tennis, tennis, cheer dance/cheerleading, and street dance. The theme for this year's season is 'Breaking Barriers, Building Legacies.'
Sr. Irene Cecile Torres, president of Assumption College, emphasized the importance of women's roles not just in sports but in their overall development during the media launch at the Makati campus on Wednesday. The previous season's champions were Assumption Antipolo (midgets), De La Salle Zobel (juniors), and Centro Escolar (seniors).
