Dumaguete City: The Negros Oriental Provincial Commission on Women (PCW) has called for the integration of women's protection and well-being into school curricula and campus activities. This proposal was discussed at a recent Kapihan forum, part of the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women. Phoebe Tan, deputy chair of the PCW, revealed that discussions have begun with the Department of Education (DepEd) to empower school staff on laws related to these issues. According to Philippines News Agency, Tan emphasized the need to address bullying, violence against women and children, and the 'bawal ang bastos' law within regular school activities or as a dedicated subject. The goal is to equip DepEd personnel with the necessary knowledge to craft policies that educate learners on protecting women and children. During the forum, panelists expressed concern about the persistent cases of violence against women, despite ongoing efforts. Aidalyn Arabe from Gender Watch Against Violence and Exploitation (GWAVE) highlighted that many women seek crisis counseling and legal advice but hesitate to take legal action against their abusers. GWAVE continues to support clients through the legal process, acknowledging the fear many women face when confronting their abusers in court. Josefina Columna, a former Gender and Development focal person, noted the ongoing challenges in implementing the Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) law, which was enacted 16 years ago. She advocated for early education on bullying and VAWC for Grade 5 and 6 students, emphasizing the role of families in combating domestic abuse. Tan and other advocates recognized the difficulty in breaking the 'cycle of violence' and acknowledged that significant work remains to achieve this goal. The provincial government, through the PWC, plans to fund a series of educational talks and activities beginning in January 2025.
