MANILA: The World Bank has sanctioned a USD750 million development policy loan aimed at accelerating digital transformation in the Philippines. This substantial financial support is designed to lower barriers to entry and investment in the broadband sector, fostering competition and enhancing connectivity across the nation. According to Philippines News Agency, the loan, known as the Second Digital Transformation Development Policy Loan, will assist the Philippine government in adapting to a dynamic legal and regulatory environment. It seeks to boost efficiency and transparency through digital technologies and expand financial inclusion by promoting secure digital financial services. The funding will also enhance transparency, bolster customer protection, and improve payments infrastructure. Furthermore, the World Bank has indicated that the policy loan will enhance trust in e-commerce, expand logistics capabilities, create jobs in digital services, and bolster the Philippines' competitiveness in the digita l sector. These initiatives are expected to have a transformative impact on productivity and the efficiency of critical services such as transport, healthcare, education, energy, and agriculture. Zafer Mustafaoglu, World Bank Country Director for the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei, emphasized the vital role of digitalization in driving productivity-led growth. He highlighted the potential for digital platforms to bridge gaps in service delivery, ensuring access to affordable financial services and digital solutions. Mustafaoglu also underscored the importance of financial inclusion and digitally enabled services for the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises in the country. He noted that greater access to digital financial services allows these businesses to adopt innovative technologies and automation, thereby boosting their competitiveness and contribution to the economy.
