Visayas: The yellow alert status over the Visayas grid has been extended for Wednesday, stretching from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., as high demand continues to outstrip the grid's operating margin, which remains insufficient for the contingency requirement.
According to Philippines News Agency, the yellow alert was previously in effect on Tuesday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported that the grid's available capacity stands at approximately 2,550 megawatts (MW), while peak demand is projected to reach 2,478 MW.
The primary reason behind the yellow alert status is the thin operating margin, exacerbated by the forced outage of several power plant units. Units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas Inc., unit 3 of the Panay Energy Development Corporation, and unit 3 of KEPCO SPC Power Corp. remain out of operation.
The NGCP further indicated that ten power plants are currently on forced outage, with some outages dating back to previous years. Specifically, eight units have been offline since May, one since March 2026, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.
In addition to these outages, there are 12 power plants operating at reduced capacities. The total unavailable capacity for the grid is around 984.8 MW, as per NGCP reports.
