Manila: The Filipino youth played a key role in defending the country during World War II, Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) deputy administrator Assistant Secretary Restituto Aguilar recalled on Tuesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, during activities honoring Philippine veterans, the Filipino youth sector, particularly scouts and the National Youth Commission, is always invited, Aguilar said. "During the Second World War, a large portion of those who defended our country was the youth. Our soldiers at that time aged 18, there were some at 17 and 23 years old -- and this was about 80 percent of those who fought in Bataan and Corregidor," he said during the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon interview over People's Television Network.

Aguilar emphasized the importance of preparing the youth to serve the country, as they are the next line of defense for the nation. "It is really important for the youth to be prepared to serve the country. They are the next defenders of the country," he added.

On Monday, the Philippine Army commenced the commemoration of the 84th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) and the Philippine Veterans' Week with a solemn Sunrise Ceremony and wreath-laying at Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. This year's Araw ng Kagitingan is anchored on the theme "Giting ng Bayani, Pamana sa Salinlahi" (Bravery of Heroes, Legacy to Generations).

Army chief Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete led the Sunrise Ceremony by offering 84 flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the crack of dawn, symbolizing new hope for the motherland. It also served as a symbolic gesture of gratitude to veterans who fought to secure the country's freedom. He was joined by Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. for the wreath-laying ceremony.

To cap the day's activities, Nafarrete and Office of Presidential Adviser for Peace, Reconciliation and Unity Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. led the Review in Honor of Veterans at the Philippine Army grandstand.
