Zamboanga city: The city government is set to use two electric vehicles (EVs) for an experiment to determine how much it can save on fuel expenses. Mayor Khymer Olaso made the announcement Tuesday as he led the unveiling of SM City Zamboanga's free EV charging station.

According to Philippines News Agency, the experimental use of the two EV units is intended to assess their viability and capability, as well as the advantages of using this type of transportation. Mayor Olaso expressed that more units would be purchased if they prove effective in reducing the city government's fuel expenses. The city hall will receive its own EV charging station, included in the supplier's package with the purchase of the two EV units.

Mayor Olaso highlighted the health benefits of EVs, noting their environmentally friendly nature compared to traditional fuel-powered vehicles that emit carbon monoxide. He also encouraged users of the EV charging station at SM City Zamboanga to utilize the facility responsibly and assist in its maintenance to ensure its long-term serviceability, as it is available free of charge.

The EV charging station features a Wallbox Pulsar Plus Alternating Current (AC) charger, delivering up to 7.4 kilowatts of charging power, with a five-meter integrated cable. It is compatible with Type 3 EVs, including popular EV brands nationwide.

Aileen Ann Enriquez, the mall manager at SM City Zamboanga, remarked that the official launch of the EV charging station marked a significant milestone, not only for the mall but also for the city. She emphasized the collective effort to create a future-ready city that embraces innovation while caring for the environment for future generations.

The newly inaugurated EV charging station along Mayor Agan Avenue in Barangay Camino Nuevo is the second such facility in the city, with the first located at SM City Mindpro in the downtown area.
