Zamboanga city: A 40-year-old housewife and her nine-year-old daughter died, while two other children were injured in a landslide at a remote village here caused by heavy rain on Tuesday night. In a report on Wednesday, the Zamboanga City Police Office said the incident happened around 9 p.m. in Barangay Sibulao, 67.2 km east of the city proper. The mother who perished was identified as Carmelita Andico, while her minor daughter's name was not disclosed.
According to Philippines News Agency, the victims were brought to a hospital by Mayor Khymer Olaso, who rushed to Sibulao after he was informed of the incident. 'I was eating supper while my wife and children were preparing to sleep when we heard a roaring sound, then suddenly our house was covered with mud,' Carmelita's husband, Erwin, told reporters in an interview on Wednesday. Erwin, who was slightly injured, said they all thought the rumbling sound was caused by a strong current in the nearby river.
Ramil Manalopilar, Sibulao village councilor, said no other house was affected in the landslide. He said the victims' house, which was made of light materials, was destroyed.
