The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced on Thursday that some PHP2.3 million innovation funds had been released to three food-based firms through its Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).

Martin Wee, DOST-9 director, said in a statement that the funds’ recipients are the Monay’s Foodhaus in Pagadian City; and Shinelo’s Cake Creations and Liana’s Food Products and Manufacturing, both from Molave town.

Wee said the Nonay’s Foodhaus received PHP1.1 million for the implementation of charcoal briquette production in support of their major product produced, the lechon (roasted pig).

Shinelo’s Cake Creations received PHP651,952 for the upgrading of bakery facilities and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system that will support the increase in production capacity of customized cakes and provide an effective inventory and sales tracking system for the smooth operation of the firm, according to Wee.

He said Liana’s Food Products and Manufacturing got PHP499,575 for the enhancement of tablea and chocolate production through the acquisition of industrial-grade melanger machine.

He said the DOST interventions such as product testing, consultancy on proper production lay-out, and human resource development through the conduct of food safety and 5S (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain) training are part of the lined-up activities for the newly approved projects.

The agency supports local food producers, allowing them to reinvigorate the economy by providing enough food-based supply and demand in the market, and sustaining employment opportunities for the locals, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.
