Manila: Losing candidates in the May 12, 2025 midterm polls can now be appointed to government positions by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., as the one-year ban on such appointments has lapsed as of Wednesday. This development opens up opportunities for those who were unsuccessful in the elections to potentially serve in government roles.
According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Erwin Garcia stated in a Viber message that individuals who lost in the 2025 elections are eligible for appointment starting Wednesday. The one-year ban is grounded in Section 6 of Article 9 (b) of the 1987 Constitution, which restricts the appointment of losing candidates to government posts within a year following an election. This measure aims to prevent the abuse of appointive power and ensure equal opportunities for public service.
Garcia clarified that while the President holds the prerogative to make appointments, these are subject to legal limitations. When asked if the President commonly uses this opportunity to make Cabinet appointments, Garcia emphasized that the decision for such appointments is often guided by tradition, respect, and wisdom.
