Iloilo city: A total of 129 public schools in Western Visayas have transitioned to alternative delivery modes of learning, impacting 112,758 students, due to adverse weather conditions on Monday. 'All of these were declared by their respective local chief executives. We have four areas where we have suspension of in-person classes. Automatically, all of our 112,758 learners have shifted to alternative delivery mode,' stated Hernani Escullar Jr., Information Officer for the Department of Education in Western Visayas (DepEd-6) during an interview.

According to Philippines News Agency, the suspension affects educational institutions in Iloilo City and the municipalities of Oton, Tigbauan, and Pavia. Escullar emphasized that while the monitoring specifically covers public schools, private schools and state universities and colleges within these areas are also mandated to follow the guidelines set by local government units.

Escullar mentioned that face-to-face classes are anticipated to resume on Tuesday. However, if the suspension remains, the schools will await further instructions from local authorities regarding the resumption of in-person classes. The transition to alternative learning is included in the required school days, negating the need for remedial or extension classes.

Additionally, disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) officers are actively assessing whether any schools have suffered damage. 'We have not received any information right now, but our DRRM in division offices are checking the schools in their respective jurisdiction,' Escullar noted.
