Albay: At least 1,000 beneficiaries from the province of Albay have received food baskets as part of the Walang Gutom Program initiated by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 5 (Bicol).

According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD-5 Director Norman Laurio reported that 800 low-income beneficiaries were provided with nutritious and quality food items from December 22 to 23. The remaining beneficiaries are scheduled to receive their food baskets before the New Year. The program aims to address food insecurity among vulnerable households and ensure that their tables are not empty during the festive season.

Lolita Parrar Pesonila, a 62-year-old housewife and mother of four from Barangay 30 Pigcale, expressed her gratitude for the food basket, considering it an early Christmas gift. She stated, "This is such a huge blessing for us, especially with the upcoming Christmas. Very helpful. Thank you so much."

Pesonila was among the initial recipients from various areas of Albay, including Legazpi City, Manito, Malinao, Bacacay, Sto. Domingo, Tabaco, Malilipot, Tiwi, Camalig, Guinobatan, Daraga, Ligao, Pio Duran, and Libon, who have already redeemed their food items. Beneficiaries from Oas, Rapu-Rapu, and Polangui are expected to collect their food baskets before January 1.

Laurio emphasized that the initiative not only ensures food availability and accessibility for low-income families but also promotes proper nutrition during the holiday season.
