Legazpi: A total of 729 families, amounting to 2,889 individuals, within the six-kilometer permanent danger zone of Mayon Volcano are set to be evacuated, as confirmed by the Office of Civil Defense in Bicol (OCD-5) on Tuesday. The operation is in response to volcanic activity that necessitates the precautionary measure of moving residents to safety.
According to Philippines News Agency, OCD-5 Director Claudio Yucot detailed that the Albay Public Safety Emergency and Management Office (APSEMO) has mobilized Army trucks to assist in the evacuation process. This decision follows a report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology indicating an infusive magmatic eruption, which, although not sudden, warrants immediate evacuation to ensure safety.
Director Yucot also mentioned that the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council's response cluster is scheduled to convene on Wednesday to strategize support measures for the evacuees. The Department of Social Welfare and Development has pledged to prepare food packs for those affected, and local government engineering offices have been alerted to ready additional evacuation centers should the need arise.
Data from APSEMO highlights the distribution of evacuees: 312 families, totaling 1,181 individuals, from Tabaco City; 287 families, or 1,193 individuals, from Malilipot; 100 families, or 407 individuals, from Camalig; 25 families, or 91 individuals, from Ligao; four families, or 16 individuals, from Guinobatan; and one individual from Daraga.
Camalig Mayor Carlos Irwin Baldo Jr. emphasized the priority of safety through a social media post, stating that classes at Baligang Elementary School and Bariw Elementary School were suspended at 2 p.m. to facilitate their use as temporary evacuation centers for residents from barangays Anoling, Sua, and Quirangay.
