2 Negros Oriental Towns to Host New Coast Guard Sub-Stations

Vallehermoso: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has secured agreements with two municipalities in Negros Oriental for the establishment of new sub-stations. Lt. Abigail Marionne Enopia, Coast Guard-Negros Oriental Station commander, announced that Vallehermoso and Manjuyod have committed to hosting these facilities through agreements signed with the PCG.

According to Philippines News Agency, Vallehermoso has signed a 25-year memorandum of agreement, while Manjuyod has agreed to a 20-year partnership. Enopia highlighted the significance of these agreements, stating that years of efforts to gain support from local government units (LGUs) in Negros Oriental have finally yielded results. "We finally got a breakthrough and we hope that other towns and cities will follow suit," she remarked.

Enopia explained that the establishment of Coast Guard sub-stations is mandated by law for coastal municipalities and cities to improve response times and enforce maritime laws against illegal fishing and other activities. Currently, the Coast Guard operates sub-stations in several locations across the province, including Bayawan City, Siaton, Zamboanguita, Bacong, Dumaguete City, Sibulan, Amlan, Bais City, Ayungon, Tayasan, and Guihulngan City. Out of the 25 LGUs in the province, only Valencia, Pamplona, Mabinay, and Canlaon City are not located along the coast.

In Vallehermoso, the local government unit has allocated a structure and lot for the PCG's use, while in Manjuyod, located in Barangay Campuyo, a 30-square-meter lot has been provided, with the local government offering to cover utility expenses. Manjuyod is known for its whale and dolphin watching tours in Ta±on Strait and its famous white sandbar, which underscores the importance of maritime safety and environmental protection in the area, as noted by Enopia.

Enopia further mentioned that efforts are underway to establish a sub-station in Sta. Catalina, following approval from the Manalongon village chief to use a lot last year. She expressed hope that other LGUs, such as La Libertad, Jimalalud, San Jose, Dauin, and Basay, will also provide space for similar facilities to enhance the Coast Guard's capabilities in the region.
