Visayas grid under yellow alert due to coal plant outages:isayas Grid Under Yellow Alert Due to Coal Plant Outages

Visayas: The yellow alert status for the Visayas grid will be in effect from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. Friday, as generating units of major coal-fired power plants remain on forced outage. The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that the grid's operating margin remains below the transmission grid's contingency requirements, primarily due to the unavailability of Units 1 and 2 of the Therma Visayas, Inc. (TVI), Unit 3 of the Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC), and Unit 1 of the KEPCO-SPC Power Corp. (KSPC).

According to Philippines News Agency, the grid's available capacity is approximately 2,523 megawatts (MW) while peak demand is expected to reach 2,476 MW. The situation has been exacerbated by the fact that, just this month, 13 power plants in the Visayas are on forced outage. Additionally, eight plants have been on outage since May, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.

The NGCP also noted that another 13 power plants are currently operating on derated capacities, resulting in 995.7 MW being unavailable to the grid. In response to the ongoing power shortages, energy department officials have stated that measures are being undertaken to address the situation. These measures include tapping private-owned power generators and barges to provide additional supply to the grid.
