5 Killed, 2 Injured, 6 Missing in Lanao Sur Landslide

Calanogas: Search, rescue, and retrieval operations are underway in Calanogas, Lanao del Sur, following a landslide early Friday, according to the police. The Lanao del Sur Police reported the incident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. in Barangay Ngingir, Calanogas, resulting in five fatalities, two injuries, and six missing individuals trapped beneath the rubble.

According to Philippines News Agency, authorities identified the deceased as Norhaya Camar, Mohsin Juhary, Naifa Mansawi, Akmad Camar, and Norhaina Ali. The missing persons include Mujahid Abduljamid, Mobairah Abdulrashid, Norhasan Abdulrashid, Lilikan Arab, Norlin Ali, and Norhanima Ali. The identities of the two injured victims have not yet been verified.

Police reported that responders reached the landslide scene on foot at 6 a.m. due to impassable roads. "Responders secured the incident site and conducted manual excavation and mechanical digging to extricate the victims trapped beneath the debris," noted the police report.

Initial investigations revealed that continuous heavy rainfall caused the landslide, leading to the collapse of a large volume of soil that buried the victims residing nearby. The heavy rainfall was attributed to the southwest monsoon, intensified by Typhoon Inday.

The rescue efforts involve personnel from the Calanogas Municipal Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the local government unit, barangay officials, and volunteers.
