Baguio: Five national road sections in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and Cagayan Valley Region have been rendered impassable to all types of vehicles due to the combined effects of the southwest monsoon, locally known as "habagat", and a low-pressure area (LPA), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced.
According to Philippines News Agency, in a report to DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon, the Bureau of Maintenance confirmed that as of 10 a.m., the road closures include the following: Baguio-Itogon Road in Sitio Goldfield, Barangay Poblacion, Itogon, Benguet, due to a soil collapse; Balbalan-Pinukpuk Road in Pinukpuk, Kalinga, also due to soil collapse; Lubuagan-Batong Buhay-Abra Boundary Road in Balatoc, Pasil, Kalinga, due to soil and rock collapse; Cabagan-Sta. Maria Road at the Cabagan-Sta. Maria Overflow Bridge in Isabela, due to high water elevation; and Cagayan-Apayao Road at Itawes Overflow Bridge 1 in Piat, Cagayan, due to a scoured bridge approach.
The DPWH has installed warning signs to guide motorists and has deployed quick response teams to conduct clearing operations for the immediate reopening of the affected roads.
Additionally, two national road sections are currently passable only to light vehicles. These include Kennon Road in Sitio Camp 2, Barangay Twin Peaks and along Rockshed approach, Camp 6, Tuba, Benguet, due to soil collapse, damaged slope protection, and road slip; and Luyang-Poo-Lazi Road in Cangomantong, Lazi, Siquijor, due to road slip.
In the meantime, as part of ongoing preparedness efforts, the DPWH has prepositioned and deployed 7,209 personnel and 1,347 pieces of equipment as quick response assets across Luzon, the Negros Island Region, and Eastern Visayas.
