Calamba city: Senator Risa Hontiveros announced on Wednesday that the proposal to establish a five-year term for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials is gaining traction within the Senate.

According to Philippines News Agency, the bill, which is currently sponsored by Senator Francis 'Chiz' Escudero, has begun its interpellations. Hontiveros, speaking at the Liga ng mga Barangay Inter-Province Congress in Calamba City, expressed optimism about the proposal's progress, likening its potential success to the House of Representatives' recent approval of its version of the measure on third and final reading. "It appears that, as in the House, there will likely be easy consensus on setting the term at five years - half a decade," she noted.

A significant unresolved issue, however, is whether the barangay and SK elections scheduled for November will proceed as planned or face another postponement. Hontiveros addressed the gathered barangay and SK officials from Laguna, Quezon, and Rizal, emphasizing their role as the 'closest face of government' to the communities they serve.

The senator expressed gratitude to the village and youth officials for their dedication and service, urging them to continue fostering unity among their constituents to enhance local governance. "I hope we continue striving to further unite our people from the barangay level, especially in the SK," she stated.

In her remarks, Hontiveros also highlighted Calamba City's historical connection to national hero Jose Rizal, reminding the SK officials of the enduring hope young leaders represent for the country's future. She emphasized the critical role grassroots leaders play in making governance more responsive and bringing public service closer to ordinary Filipinos.
