60-Day Price Control Implemented in Laua-an Amid Calamity

Manila: A 60-day Automatic Price Control (APC) is being implemented in the Municipality of Laua-an in Antique, currently under the state of calamity due to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Opong. The APC ensures the prices of the basic commodities will remain stable and the consumers will be protected from traders who might take advantage of the situation, said Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Antique Senior Trade and Industry Development Specialist Arnel Oliveros on Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the APC being implemented has a 60-day duration, unless otherwise lifted by the President. Oliveros stated that the APC will last until November 27, since it took effect on September 28. He added that the Negosyo Center Councilor in Laua-an is conducting daily monitoring of the four major stores in the municipality to ensure compliance.

'Adherence of the store or establishments is being required, and those found to be violating could be fined with corresponding imprisonment depending on the gravity of their offense,' Oliveros said. Store owners are being informed of the APC, and customers are advised to always check the prices of the basic commodities to avoid overpricing.

In a separate interview, Laua-an Mayor Aser Baladjay highlighted the significant damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Opong, estimating PHP15 million in damages to rice farms and sugar lands, in addition to 20 houses that were destroyed. 'We have to declare our municipality to be under the state of calamity so we can use a portion of our PHP12 million calamity fund to respond to the needs of our constituents,' Baladjay stated.
