Manila: Acclaimed Korean novelist Kim Ho-yeon is set to visit the Philippines from September 9 to 13 for a five-day literature program aimed at bringing Korean literature closer to Filipino readers. Best known internationally for his novel 'The Second Chance Convenience Store,' Kim's work delves into themes of kindness, community, healing, and the possibility of starting anew.
According to Philippines News Agency, the novel became a bestseller in Korea, selling over 2 million copies and has since been translated into multiple languages, including English, Japanese, Polish, Chinese, and Spanish. During his visit, Kim will lead the Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in the Philippines' program titled 'Moments with Kim Ho-yeon: Where Second Chances Begin,' in collaboration with the 45th Manila International Book Festival (MIBF).
The program is designed to connect Kim with Filipino readers, students, and the KCC Book Club through various activities, such as talks, discussions, and book signing sessions. KCC Philippines Director Myeongjin Kim expressed hopes for the events to create a meaningful space for Filipino readers to engage with Korean literature and appreciate the diverse stories and perspectives it offers.
The initiative aims to strengthen the growing exchange between Korean and Filipino readers, fostering a deeper appreciation of each other's literary cultures. Interest in Korean literature has been on the rise in the Philippines, with titles like Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop and Love in the Big City gaining popularity. Additionally, the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to Korean author Han Kang has further heightened international interest in Korean literary works.
The 'Moments with Kim Ho-yeon: Where Second Chances Begin' program will launch on September 9 with the KCC's K-Story Convenience Store Booth at the MIBF, located at the SMX Convention Center Manila. On September 10, a meet-and-greet session and book signing will take place at the KCC Library, followed by a special talk by Kim at the University of the Philippines Diliman on September 11.
The program will conclude on September 12 at the MIBF, where Kim will participate in a stage interview, culminating with a book signing and meet-and-greet at the National Book Store stage.
