Manila: Abra Lone District Representative JB Bernos has expressed his support for the implementation of active shooter simulation drills in schools nationwide, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in the face of potential threats. According to Philippines News Agency, these drills are being introduced following the recent tragic school shooting in Tacloban, highlighting the urgent need for students and staff to be trained in appropriate response measures.

Bernos, who serves as the vice chair of the committee on public order and safety, stated the necessity of these drills, drawing parallels to the effectiveness of earthquake drills in preventing harm to students during seismic events. He stressed that such preparedness is crucial for ensuring safety in educational environments.

The Department of Education has already announced plans to conduct these drills, focusing on survival tactics during potential gun attacks. In support of this initiative, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. announced that police officers would actively participate in the drills. Furthermore, the PNP plans to enhance security measures by incorporating nearby campuses into daily police patrols and maintaining a presence during Monday flag-raising ceremonies.

Additionally, the PNP's women and children protection desk will assist schools with programs centered on guidance counseling and the establishment of anti-bullying desks. These efforts aim to foster a safer and more supportive school environment.

Bernos also emphasized the need for increased police visibility and stronger security measures in schools to prevent future incidents. He expressed gratitude to the PNP for their prompt response and commitment to maintaining public safety, underscoring the role of schools as sanctuaries of peace and learning for the youth.
