Legazpi city: The Albay Police Provincial Office (APPO) has activated border control points and intensified police presence around Mayon Volcano in response to the elevation of the alert status from 1 to 2, indicating an increasing/moderate level of unrest. This measure is aimed at maintaining peace, order, and public safety in the surrounding towns and cities.
According to Philippines News Agency, APPO Director Col. Noel Nu±ez stated in a phone interview that 133 police officers are deployed around the clock in Tabaco City, Malilipot, Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Ligao City, Sto. Domingo, and Legazpi City. These border control points have been established to regulate movement and prevent unauthorized entry into the 6-kilometer danger zone. Although no forced evacuations are currently in place, some families have chosen to relocate voluntarily to stay with relatives outside the danger area.
The primary objective of these control points is to ensure public safety. APPO has also made provisions for additional personnel, logistical support, and coordination with local government units to maintain readiness and mobility. Col. Nu±ez emphasized that, with the support of Governor Noel Rosal, officers are well-prepared and equipped, including the use of facemasks during their eight-hour shifts for their protection.
Col. Nu±ez personally inspected the checkpoints to oversee operations and ensure that officers adhere to standard procedures, remain vigilant, document activities thoroughly, and engage courteously with motorists and commuters.
In a related development, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has extended the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) concerning flights near Mayon Volcano. The advisory, covering airspace from the surface up to 11,000 feet, is valid from January 4, 7:47 a.m. to January 6, 9 a.m. It cautions pilots against flying close to the volcano due to the risk of sudden phreatic eruptions.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported one volcanic earthquake and 44 rockfall events, prompting the alert level increase on January 1. CAAP continues to coordinate with relevant agencies and advises all operators to comply with the NOTAM.
