Albay Tricycle Drivers Receive PHP3.65 Million Cash Aid from Government

Camalig: The Camalig municipal government, along with beneficiaries, has expressed gratitude to the national government for providing PHP3.65 million in cash assistance to 730 registered members of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers' Association (TODA) during the distribution taking place on Friday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Edlyn Noble, head of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO), stated that the PHP5,000 cash aid for each beneficiary from the municipality's 50 barangays is aimed at helping them cope with daily expenses amid the ongoing economic crisis. Noble emphasized the importance of this assistance for tricycle drivers, who are among the most affected sectors, noting that the aid is intended not only for fuel but also for food and other family needs.

The MSWDO extended its appreciation to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) under Secretary Rex Gatchalian for their timely financial aid to the transport sector. Noble highlighted that the government has not forgotten the drivers, expressing gratitude for the support, and also acknowledged the efforts of the local government unit under Camalig Mayor Caloy Baldo in facilitating the program.

Noble further mentioned that the local government is coordinating with national agencies and is waiting for further directives from the DSWD regarding potential additional assistance. Beneficiaries also expressed their gratitude, noting that the cash aid provides much-needed relief in the face of rising fuel prices and low passenger turnout.

Christopher Pabula, a 47-year-old tricycle driver who occasionally works in construction, mentioned that the assistance will help cover fuel and daily expenses. 'Thank you for the assistance. This is a big help for us, especially with high fuel prices and fewer passengers,' he said. Similarly, Reynerio Sulan, 65, who relies solely on driving for a living, shared that the aid can be used to buy fuel or support his family's daily needs, acknowledging it as a significant help.

The DSWD Bicol is also conducting simultaneous payouts to tricycle drivers in different towns of the region on Friday.
